Travel Day 3 / Orientation Day 1
I left Somerset in pretty good shape, got slightly lost, and arrived to the site around lunch time. I was amazed to see the site director returning from last year. I'm very glad that a number of the administration have returned from last year in some way. The site director, director of residential life, one of the academic deans, and of course the office manager have all returned to the site. This has caused things to run much more smoothly during orientation than they did last year. Incredibly, nobody got shot during the discussion of the lunch supervision schedule.
There might not be much else to report at this point. We've just been in and out of meetings all day. It is slightly boring, but the way it has been done this year has been a little different. We have played some games, but they haven't been the retarded get-to-know-you games that we're all so familiar with.
I ran a half mile today for the first time without feeling like I was going to fall over dead. So, progress is being made in that department. I also got up at 5:30 this morning in order to do it before it got to hot. There are some people that are going out running right now, but I'm more of a morning runner. It must be that whole Marine Corps thing.
When I checked in the Office Manager asked me if it felt like I never left. It wasn't quite like that, but certainly there was an air of familiarity to it. I certainly feel comfortable with everything that is going on since I've done this once before. There were apparently a lot of complaints about the chow hall at the end of last year. There have been a number of changes made in order to make things more friendly.
In a way coming here is like walking into a monastery. The campus boundaries form the walls of the abbey and the purpose here is extremely focused. There is not doubt that working here is vocationally renewing in many ways. The outside world intrudes as much or as little as one chooses in a lot of ways. Yet, it always does intrude.
